I want to share

Lexington 9/28-10/9/2005

We left home at 5:20 am Wed. 9/28, & arrived at KHP some time in the afternoon before rush hour.

Friday on my way onto the apron I heard one woman ask another if she had ever owned horses & then advise severely against it. I turned around & saw it was Annette Roydon from Vermont, whom I met last year watching the races from the upper grandstand. She has sold all her horses, I think, & raises free-range beef cattle. Her last horse sold was Naughty Nunu, who will race this week. She had one amazing story of a highland cow hiding her new calf for 6 weeks while coming to the barn every day for her own food. They happened upon the calf one day ranging the hills in their ATV. This same cow then became thinner & thinner, & they discovered that she was nursing an extra child. A more extroverted cow had abandoned her calf, & this good cow took over. I’m fuzzy on the details because I didn’t write this tale down early. Annette is 58 & feels both good & strong thanks to hard farm work. Her osteoporosis count was off the chart; she also lifts 50# on a regular basis.

On October 1, KF Day, Jeremy Wilson, a big guy & owner of the Red Mile giftshop, proposed on TV to his diminutive Christy, as the conclusion to a televised interview & quick tour of the shop’s merchandise. Jeremy sells our photo notecards there & asked me to take some pictures. I checked the schedule with Peter Kleinhans, who would be the interviewer, & he said that he had done the same thing! The tour and the proposal were broadcast to the track audience outside. Everyone cheered, & I flashed some middling shots of the event inside. Christy’s speechless surprise added real suspense, but she did say Yes. They plan to marry next year at the track.
